Seit unsere Hauser von Antennen, Kabeln und Funksignalen durchlochert werden, seit Medien, wie Fernsehen, Telefon und Internet einen Raum konstituieren, der nicht mehr an einen Ort gebunden ist, muss auch die Frage: "Wie werden wir wohnen?" neu gestellt werden. Grenzverschiebungen und Grenzauflosungen fordern die Disziplin Architektur. Dazu gehort das fortschreitende Einbrechen des medialen in den gebauten Raum genauso, wie das Aufweichen der Kategorien 'Stadt' und 'Land' oder 'Zentrum' und 'Peripherie'. Auf einer sozialen Ebene verandern sich die Schnittstellen zwischen privaten und offentlichen Bereichen sowie zwischen Freizeit, Arbeit und Wohnen. Auf der Ebene des gebauten Raumes zeichnet sich die zunehmende Flexibilisierung von Raumprogrammen bis hin zur Auflosung standardisierter Gebaudetypologien ab. Und auf einer technologischen Ebene erfahren ehemals feste materielle Grenzen, wie Wandelemente oder Fassaden, erhohte Durchlassigkeiten und verringerte Permanenzen.

Kein osterreichisches Architekturburo hat sich mit diesen 'Grenzkrisen' so offensiv und innovativ auseinander gesetzt, wie das Buro SPLITTERWERK. Seit Ende der 1980er Jahre beschaftigen sich SPLITTERWERK mit der "Entmaterialisierung" von Architektur im Zeitalter medialer Reproduktion. Bereits in den fruhen Entwurfen zur "Aufhebung von Mastablichkeit in der Architektur" werden die traditionellen Zusammenhange von Form, Funktion und Konstruktion verworfen. "Schaltbare Gefuge" katapultieren modernistische Vorstellungen von flieenden Raumkontinuen ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Entwicklung der "Multiinzidenten Hulle" verwandelt die Erfahrung des Wohnens in mediale Ereignisketten. In der von SPLITTERWERK seit 1998 entwickelten "Grazer Wohnung" werden Wande zu mageschneiderten Tapeten, zu Bildwelten, in denen sich beliebig Funktionen zuschalten lassen. Die Erforschung von experimentellen Oberflachen, von Beschichtungen und Reliefs aus computergenerierten Ornamenten bis hin zu elektronisch gesteuerten, bisweilen interaktiven Projektionen oder selbstleuchtenden Oberflachen, fuhrt SPLITTERWERK zu einer grundsatzlichen Neubewertung des Bildhaften in der Architektur: "Heute sind Muster die Chance auf einen neuerlichen Paradigmenwechsel in der Architektur. Muster ersetzen dabei die Frage nach Proportionen, Kubatur und Rhythmus von Fassaden. Muster werden zur Grundlage des Entwurfsprozesses, sowohl fur die posturbane Stadt - die Agglomeration - als auch fur den Gebaudeentwurf: Die Stadt als losgeloster Teil eines Musters, der Gebaudehybrid als das in die dritte Dimension entwickelte und gebaute Ornament Geometrische Formen wie Wurfel, Kugeln, Pyramiden, Prismen und Sterne, aber auch Fische, Enten, Oktopusse und Frosche setzen den Anfang zur Entwicklung hin zu einer figurativen Architektur." In einer Stadtlandschaft, die langst zur bildhaften Kulisse - zum Stadtbild - geworden ist, platzieren SPLITTERWERK ihre Gebaude als uberdimensionale Bildteile. "Die Ente," "der Frosch" werden in ihrer unangemessenen Mastablichkeit zu Zeichen, die weder von Macht noch von technischer Machbarkeit erzahlen, nicht von Stil oder Funktion, sondern die auf sich selbst und die Bildhaftigkeit ihrer Umgebung verweisen.
