After graduating from high school, he relocated to Oakland, where he adopted the moniker "Little Rock." While performing on the West Coast, he finally met John Coltrane. I was scrounging up whatever I could, like a bird or something. Sanders met Sun Ra, the legendary cosmic bandleader while working as a chef at the little MacDougal Street coffeehouse known as the Playhouse. Sun Ra gave the young tenor saxophonist a new name: "Pharoah."
