About the Book

Spirits are among us..... Since early childhood, Dylan Martin had a sinister dark cloud looming overhead. And it didn't help there was an invisible finger tapping him on the shoulder during the day or had a giant man chasing him in his nightmares with an electrifying touch. Fearing a life suited with a straightjacket and mumbling incoherent babbles along with the other pathetic or insane of this physical world, Dylan had to keep the taunting to himself, and all the while the camera's eye kept watch. Attempts to reveal his tormentors miserably failed and after he spoke out loud at the dinner table one evening with the intention to gather help from his family, Dylan's father's ruthlessness stiffled any hope of assistance, his sibliings dared not utter a word one way or the other, and his mother though kind at heart and accomodating to her children's needs, believed a trip to the local psychiatrist was in order for her middle son. No wonder Dylan was afraid. Battleworn and beaten down by evil forces that make normal men cry defeat, Dylan's fateful journey eventually led him to the soothing ambience of the Currituck Sound along the gentle banks of Waterlily Island in North Carolina's Outer Banks region. Where his disturbing dreams became reality. Where part of our history revealed his life's purpose. And where the darkest shadows moved in tune to an existence beyond the boundaries of the normal plane. A tantalizing tale was told by the crackling of firelight where the paved road ends and a dirt path begins. Somewhere along the way, Dylan lost a gentle soul and discovered a truth in his soul. He held the already troubled world at bay and those who took his side were warned by an evilpresence well-known to America's notable fleets to heed its dire omen. Some spirits don't move on. They remain to protect what is theirs and manipulated Dylan's existence. He was chosen to carry a message from one who lived long ago and when pirates roamed the seas, from one who died a tragic and sad death at the mercy of a trespasser to the island, and from those who needed their revenge to settle the ultimate score. Spirit of the Sound grabs the attention of the reader from the beginning, with the author's quick-wit and sarcastic humor, but you know something isn't quite right in the Martin household. Dylan's adversary finally fully materializes and takes him on a quest for veracity, buried treasure along the Atlantic Ocean, and eventually teaches a valuable lesson we all can take with us as we search for our heart's content. The Spirit of the Sound is the first of four novels written so far by John T. Lehman, and the first to be published. Sequels are dancing in the author's head, so be on the look-out for more tantilizing sagas; all inspired by John's encounters with the unusual and flavorful aspects of living on the edge of this world.
