El proceso de recepción del spinozismo en Alemania constituye un caso único en la Historia de la Filosofía. Considerado por muchos como el Príncipe de los ateos, creador de una teoría absurda y monstruosa, Spinoza fue declarado por otros como el autor de un sistema irrefutable, como un ejemplo ético y religioso. Su doctrina no solo generó un gran interés en los pensadores alemanes, sino que motivó una serie de polémicas que influyeron profundamente en el desarrollo de la filosofía alemana. En efecto, todas las figuras prominentes de la escena intelectual alemana del siglo XVIII -Thomasius, Wolff, Lessing, Mendelssohn, Jacobi, Kant, Herder y Goethe, entre otros-debieron ocuparse del sistema spinoziano y tomar una posición frente a él. Este libro reconstruye la historia de la recepción de Spinoza en Alemania, desde la publicación del Tratado teológico político, en 1670 hasta la denominada polémica del Spinozismo, con la intención de indagar qué es lo que transformó a Spinoza en un pensador tan atrayente, tan polémico y tan fecundo para los filósofos alemanes.
