Die Chancengleichheit im Bildungssystem steht heute wieder zur Debatte: Es ist besonders der schulische Misserfolg von Kindern und Jugendlichen aus Immigrantenfamilien, der Besorgnis erregt. Was sind die Ursachen dieser Schwierigkeiten? Lange Zeit hat sich die Fachliteratur auf die sprachlichen und intellektuellen Fähigkeiten des Kindes und auf die Erziehungsbedingungen in der Familie konzentriert. Die Bedeutung der Schule blieb praktisch unbeachtet. Ist die Schule also bloss der passive Vollstrecker der Sozialstruktur einer Gesellschaft? Nein: Diese Untersuchung zeigt, dass schulischer Misserfolg nicht einfach das Schicksal mangelnder Begabung oder ungünstiger Familienverhältnisse ist. Grundlage sind die Daten von 2000 Schülerinnen und Schülern aus über hundert Primarschulklassen der deutschsprachigen Schweiz, die 1991 im Rahmen der internationalen «IEA-Reading Literacy Study» erhoben worden sind. Dabei zeigen sich erhebliche Unterschiede zwischen den untersuchten Schulklassen: Diese betreffen sowohl die Chancengleichheit als auch das Leistungsniveau, das in einer bestimmten Klasse erreicht wird. Die Unterschiede können durch die Lernbedingungen in der Klasse und durch den Unterricht der Lehrperson erklärt werden.
