Jahrhunderts / Gegenwart, Note: 1,0, Freie Universität Berlin (Otto-Suhr-Institut), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Ich lebe.", sagt Caligula im vierten Akt des gleichnamigen Theaterstücks von Camus zu seiner Frau Caesonia, "Ich töte, ich übe die sinnverwirrende Macht des Zerstörers, mit der verglichen die Macht des Schöpfers als billiger Abklatsch erscheint. Das heißt glücklich sein!" . Daraufhin erwürgt er sie. Aus Mangel an den üblichen Ambitionen eines römischen Kaisers, seien es militärische Heldentaten oder groß angelegte Baumaßnahmen, hatte Caligula beschlossen, den Menschen ihr "wahres" Wesen näher zu bringen und ihnen die Freiheit zu lehren, die sie den Göttern gleichstellen würde: die Freiheit über Leben und Tod selbst zu entscheiden. Aus diesem Grunde hatte er begonnen, seine Untertanen willkürlich hinzuschlachten. Denn wirkliche Freiheit zeigt sich im sinnlosen Universum des Caligula nur dort, wo der Mensch es unternimmt, sein solitäres Dasein selbst in die Hand zu nehmen, "die Zurückhaltung des Schicksals wettzumachen", selbst Schicksal zu werden und den Tod durch den Mord selbst herbeizuführen. In der "Dialektik der Aufklärung" heißt es im Exkurs zu Odysseus, dass die bürgerliche Ratio, welche die Mimesis verdrängt, selber Mimesis ist, nämlich Mimesis ans Tote. Denn "der subjektive Geist, der die Beseelung der Natur auflöst, bewältigt die entseelte nur, indem er ihre Starrheit imitiert und als animistisch sich selbst auflöst" . Entseelt wird die Natur vom aufgeklärten Menschen um sie im abstrakten Begriff begreifbar und letztlich beherrschbar zu machen. Diese Herrschaft über eine den Menschen prinzipiell gefährdende äußere Natur wird so erkauft durch die Beherrschung der eigenen inneren Natur: Der Preis der Selbsterhaltung ist daher Selbstauflösung, da gerade die innere Natur, die beherrscht und unterdrückt wird, jenes Selbst ist, was erhalten werden sollte.
