About the Book

The Indian constitution has enforced the Constitutional Act of Right to Education of every child. Therefore each and every child and every child must be given opportunity to achieve and maintain an acceptable level of education. But disability conditions have many implications for the education and development of the affected individuals. It has a direct and indirect impact on their psycho-social development. After all, the disables are human beings and on the humanitarian ground keeping in view of the human rights, every possible care has to be taken for their empowerment and fullest development. As the life a child, whether normal or disabled begins in their home with their parental care, their parents should be empowered more specifically to deal with their disabled children whose needs are different. Therefore it is need to empower the parents of the children with special needs to realize the importance of parental guidance and parental counseling. Os in this context the present study “Special Education” is an attempt to assess the role of their Social, Mental, Emotional, Educational and Vocational Development. The area of the study was confined to the Puri and Khurdha Districts of Orissa. A total of 200 parents of orthopaedically handicapped children were selected through purpose and random sampling techniques consisting of 86 illiterate parents, 76 literate parents and 38 educated parents. Data pertaining to the present study were collected through a self made structured interview schedule and were treated statistically through the use of percentage and Significance of the difference of percentage. The study findings show that, Level of Education has a significant effect on shaping the awareness of the parents of the orthopaedically challenged children in respect of rearing, caring, managing and rehabilitating their challenged children. The study highlighted that, better is the education of parents of the orthopaedically challenged children and then better is the prospects of the education and development of their challenged children. So education of parents of the disabled children should be given utmost importance and they are to be empowered to have successful parental counseling for their disabled children. This will lead to deal effectively with their challenged or disabled children and help them to have their fullest development adding to the process of total national development. The author is hopeful that this book “Special Education will be helpful to Parents, Planners, Educationists, Teacher Educators and Teacher Trainees especially dealing with the children with special needs to understand them and to providing required responses in the matters of their Education, Vocational Training, Rehabilitation and Employment and to make them empowered.About the AuthorDr. Ajay Kumar Penthoi is an Assistant Professor in Education in the Eastern Dooars B.Ed. Training College affiliated to North Bengal University of the state of West Bengal. He did his post graduate in Ravenshaw (Autonomous) College Cuttack, Orissa in 1993. He is N.E.T. Qualified and awarded Ph.D. in Education from Utkal University, Orissa. He started his professional career in 1994 at Kanas College, Kanas, Puri, Orissa. His specializations include Adult and Non-Formal Education, Population Education and Special Education. He has a number of research papers and articles published in International and National Journals. He has participated and presented papers in various seminars.
