Auf ihn greifen insbesondere die Politikwissenschaft, die Soziologie und die Sozialpsychologie zurück, um Einflussbeziehungen innerhalb des politischen Systems, in der Gesellschaft, in Organisationen oder Kleingruppen zu erklären. Denn sozialer Einfluss und somit Macht sind omnipräsent in allen Lebensbereichen. Wer Macht hat, der gilt als einflussreich: Ihm wird es leichter als einer weniger mächtigen Person gelingen, andere zu seinen Gunsten zu überzeugen. Betrachtet man die Einflussbeziehungen zwischen Mehrheiten und Minoritäten, so erscheint zunächst natürlich die Mehrheit als mächtiger. Ihr, so lässt sich vermuten, wird es leichter fallen, Angehörige von Minoritäten zu beeinflussen als umgekehrt. Dennoch sind auch Minoritäten in der Lage, Einfluss auf Angehörige der Mehrheitsfraktion auszuüben. Denn anders, so schlussfolgert Moscovici, wäre kein Wandel in Politik, Wirtschaft, Religion, Wissenschaft und Kultur möglich, da alle Menschen nach und nach einem Konformitätsdruck unterliegen und sich der Mehrheitsmeinung anschließen würden. Dass dies nicht der Fall ist, hält er für den stärksten Beweis der Existenz des Minoritäteneinflusses, den er per se als innovativ begreift. Doch welche Mechanismen liegen der Einflussausübung durch Minoritäten zugrunde? Weisen soziale Einflüsse, die durch Mehrheiten oder aber Minoritäten zustande kommen, unterschiedliche Charakteristika auf? Welche Rolle spielt der Faktor Status bei der Beeinflussung durch Angehörige einer Minorität? Und wie sollten sich Minoritäten verhalten, um erfolgreich Einfluss ausüben zu können?
