Dieses "Selbst" manifestiert unter anderem durch das Selbstkonzept, die Selbstwahrnehmung, Selbstaufmerksamkeit und Selbstregulation. Das Wissen über das Selbst, also die Selbsterkenntnis, wird durch drei verschiedene Prozesse erlangt. Diese Prozesse sind Introspektion, Selbstwahrnehmung und soziale Vergleiche. Kommunikation als Schlüssel für komplexe soziale Strukturen und Interaktion macht es möglich, sich selbst und seine Erfahrungen, Emotionen und Erlebnisse mit anderen zu teilen. Vergleiche mit anderen Menschen, also soziale Vergleiche, helfen dabei, diese Informationen für sich nutzbar zu machen. Sie beeinflussen somit die Beurteilung und das Erleben von Ereignissen: Wie gut bin ich im Sport? Habe ich in dieser Situation richtig gehandelt? Ist meine Einschätzung angemessen oder hätte ich anders reagieren sollen? Soziale Vergleiche begegnen einem unweigerlich in jeder alltäglichen Situation: im Büro, bei der Beurteilung der Gerechtigkeit von Aufgabenverteilungen, im Fitnessstudio, wenn es darum geht, wer der Schnellste oder Stärkste ist, oder in sozialen Netzwerken, wenn die Anzahl von Freunden oder Likes verglichen werden. Die Allgegenwärtigkeit von sozialen Vergleichen macht die Theorie sozialer Vergleichsprozesse und der zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen zu einem zentralen Thema der Sozialpsychologie (vgl.
