Klassische Massenmedien wie etwa Funk und Fernsehen sind heute noch weit verbreitet, haben aber scheinbar einen Teil ihrer Monopolstellung an die digitalen Medien verloren. Spätestens mit dem Auftreten Sozialer Medien hat sich ein Strukturwandel in der öffentlichen Meinungsbildung vollzogen, der sich auch in der politischen Kommunikation niedergeschlagen hat. Mit den Sozialen Medien haben politische Akteure heute ein eigenes Instrument zur Verfügung, mit dessen Hilfe sie Wahlkampf führen und politische Kommunikation betreiben können. Auf diese Weise können in kurzer Zeit viele Menschen erreicht werden. Aus der Gehirnforschung ist bekannt, dass der Mensch ein visuelles Wesen ist und sich Gesehenes besser einprägt. Die Grundannahmen dieser Arbeit beruhen darauf, dass gerade in der schnelleren und verkürzenden Online-Kommunikation der Einsatz von audiovisuellen Medien ein integraler Bestandteil der Kommunikation ist. Bilder und Videos beeinflussen die Wahrnehmung der Menschen, dienen der Vereinfachung und Verkürzung von Informationen und haben auf diese Weise Auswirkungen, zum Beispiel auf Wahlentscheidungen. Eine weitere Annahme ist, dass diese schnell verbreiteten und verkürzt dargestellten Informationen den Nährboden von Populismus und Fake News bilden. Zusammen mit den klassischen Massenmedien bilden die Sozialen Medien heute eine neue Medienrealität.
