Extrait: MON GRAND PÈRE Trois cahiers cartonnés, qui viennent de chez Wiener, papetier, rue des Dominicains, 53, à Nancy, et leurs nombreux feuillets couverts d'une écriture paisible et claire, déjà bien palie par le temps: ce sont les recueils où mon grand-père Barrès, officier de la Grande Armée, ayant pris sa retraite à Charmes-sur-Moselle, transcrivit soigneusement les douzaines de petits carnets, souillés et déchirés, qu'il avait, durant vingt ans, promenés dans son havresac sur toutes les routes de l'Europe. Itinéraire, voilà le titre exact qu'il donnait à ses étapes; Itinéraire et souvenirs d'un soldat devenu officier supérieur (Barrès, Jean-Baptiste, Auguste), né à Blesle (Haute-Loire), le 25 juillet 1784, ou tableau succinct des journées de marche et de séjour dans les villes et villages de garnison et de passage, dans les camps et les cantonnements, tant en France qu'en Allemagne, en Pologne, en Prusse, en Italie, en Espagne et en Portugal, depuis mon entrée au service le 27 juin 1804, jusqu'au 6 juin 1835, époque de mon admission à la solde de retraite. Je les ai toujours vus, ces cahiers olivâtres, couleur de l'uniforme des chasseurs de la garde, et couleur aussi des lauriers d'Apollon que j'admirai, il y a huit ans, au vallon de Daphné, près d'Antioche de Syrie. Quand j'étais enfant, mon père me les a montrés, et, grand garçon, j'ai obtenu de les lire. S'il faut tout dire, je me penchais dessus avec plus de bonne volonté que de plaisir. Je sentais que j'avais là, dans mes mains, quelque chose qui intéressait religieusement mon père, et qu'à sa mort, je recevrais comme son legs le plus précieux, quelque chose entre lui, ma soeur, moi, et nul autre. Mais alors je n'allais pas plus loin: je ne sentais pas ma profonde parenté avec mon grand-père. Il faut du temps pour que nous discernions le fond de notre être. À cette heure, la reconnaissance est complète; je ne me distingue pas de ceux qui me précédèrent dans ma famille, et certainement leurs meilleurs moments me sont plus proches qu'un grand nombre des jours et des années que j'ai vécus moi-même et qui ne m'inspirent que l'indifférence la plus dégoûtée. Maurice Barrès, né le 19 août 1862 à Charmes (Vosges) et mort le 4 décembre 1923 à Neuilly-sur-Seine (Seine), était un écrivain et homme politique français, figure de proue du nationalisme français. Le premier axe de sa pensée est le culte du Moi: Barrès affirme que notre premier devoir est de défendre notre moi contre les Barbares, c'est-à-dire contre tout ce qui risque de l'affaiblir dans l'épanouissement de sa propre sensibilité. Le second axe est résumé par l'expression La terre et les morts qu'approfondissent les trois volumes du Roman de l'énergie nationale: Les Déracinés (1897), L'Appel au soldat (1900) et Leurs Figures (1902) qui témoignent de l'évolution de Maurice Barrès vers le nationalisme républicain et le traditionalisme, l'attachement aux racines, à la famille, à l'armée et à la terre natale. Il est resté l'un des maîtres à penser de la droite nationaliste durant l'entre-deux-guerres.
