Excerpt from Souvenir of the Sacerdotal Golden Jubilee of the Most Rev. John J. Williams, D.D., Archbishop of Boston: On Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17, 1895, With Full Reports of Receptions and Presentations Incident to the Celebration

The first movement for the celebration Of the Sacerdotal Jubilee of the Most Rev. John J. Williams, D. D., Archbishop of Boston, in addition to the religious services which were arranged for by the Archbishop and the priests at the Cathedral, was made by the Diocesan Consultors, who requested Very Rev. William Byrne, D. D., V. G., to call a meeting of the priests of the diocese for the purpose of considering the matter.

In ac'cordance with this request, the vicar-general issued notices for a meeting of the priests, which was held at the Cathedral on February I4. 1895. The meeting was called to order by the Vicar General, who was made permanent chairman. Rev. R. Neagle, Chancellor of the diocese, was elected secretary.

At this meeting, a general discussion took place as to the best method Of celebrating the great event, and it was finally decided to appoint a general committee, with full powers, to make all arrange ments and manage the affair.

A meeting of the general committee was held on February 21. Very Rev. Wm. Byrne was chosen chairman, and Rev. R. Neagle, secretary. After a full discussion, it was unanimously voted to present to His Grace the Archbishop on the occasion of his Sacerdotal Jubilee, a diocesan testimonial, to consist of the united Offerings of the clergy and laity of the various parishes. It was also decided to hold a grand banquet in honor of the event.

It was also voted to authorize the Very Rev. Chairman to appoint various sub-committees to carry out the details of the celebration.
