About the Book

South Asia is a huge land mass, home to about one quarter of the world?s population. It comprises seven nations in a geographical continuum with only Sri Lanka and Maldives separated by a narrow strip of sea. The region is marked by an asymmetry of power structure, different systems of fovernance, and inter-state conflict. At the same time, the region also exhibits a great deal of harmony in ethnic composition, food habits, languages, values, mores and norms. This book highlights the various issues which make the unity in diversity in this area very unique. South Asia has not been able to forge a regional identity and the author discusses the reasons that are responsible for this. ?Soundings from South Asia? begins with the hypothesis: can South Asia ever become the United States of South Asia (USSA), and answers that the task is difficult, but not impossible. The book is an attempt to provide a compendium of the region?s development through short essays, and helps in understanding the regional dynamics which blocks regional integration. The core argument remains that salvation of the region lies only in mitigating the sub continental differences. ? Soundings from South Asia? is a collection of over seventy articles written over the last one decade. Since most of the issue are still relevant, the book provides a panoramic view of the developing themes. The book provides an inputting them in the proper perspective. The book contains fifteen chapters including ?Soundings? and ?Resounding? as the first and last chapters.
