About the Book

An Archaeological Mystery for Ages 10 - 16Mags O' Connor is on holiday in Italy where her archaeologist parents are excavating a Roman village. The dig unearths the graves of children, buried with rmysterious objects such as raven claws and puppy tails. A painting on a wall suggests the ancient inhabitants had tried to rid the village of plague with sorcery.Mags encounters a mysterious woman on the hillside and, together with her brother Richard and a local boy, Luca, discovers evidence in a secret chamber in the caves beyond the village, that ancient sorcery may not be dead.Mags dreams of the lost plague victims who beg her to help them and unravels a trail of sorcery which has destroyed generations of the town's children. She must defeat the darkness, or many more victims will be swept to the grave and beyond - to a fate far worse than death.
About the Author: Once upon a time a baby was born in a Gothic mansion in far-away Cleethorpes. The baby's parents didn't know what to call the strange little thing, which had green hair all down its back, and they were afraid it might get snatched away by goblins. They looked in all kind of books and magazines and finally decided to call their baby Cara Louise. The goblins never came but as she grew up in suburban Surrey, Cara Louise often saw green men in the school yard - and red, orange and blue ones too - and her bewildered parents frequently found their daughter talking to the wizard who lived in the tunnel which connected their garden to the school. She started writing ghost stories and terrorised her younger brother with tales of hooded monks with skulls for a face and was scolded by her mother for scaring him so much that he couldn't sleep at night. As she grew older, Cara Louise began to channel her fascination with ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night by writing mystery stories for children. She once had a proper job in the library at Southend-on-Sea but spoilt that illusion of respectability by running away to the Isle of Avalon and gained inspiration for her stories by sitting on the Glastonbury leylines and communing with the Earth Spirit. Here she published her first book The Boy From The Hills and wrote Annie and the Dragon in her bedroom by a window which framed Glastonbury Tor. Cara later studied for her BA in Writing and English at the Alsager campus of Manchester Metropolitan University and - lo and behold! - her bedroom here overlooked another Hill of Power, Mow Cop in Staffordshire, which along with the nearby mysterious mansion of Biddulph Grange, served as inspiration for The Beast of Biddersley Grange Trilogy. Cara Louise has also travelled extensively and gained an MA in Writing For Children from King Alfred's College, Winchester. She has won 2nd prizes in Writing for Children and First Three Pages of a Novel at the Annual Writers' Conference, Winchester for her archaeological thriller, BETRAYED. She lived for a while in darkest Borneo, near the misty islands of the pirate-frequented Celebes Sea, until a group of armed intruders from the Sulu islands decided to ambush police officers outside one of the schools she was working in, leading to evacuation back to Blighty. As for her unfortunate younger brother, he still sleeps with the light on.
