Ramón María Valle Peña, también conocido como Ramón del Valle-Inclán fue un dramaturgo, poeta y novelista español, que formó parte de la corriente literaria denominada modernismo y se encuentra próximo, en sus últimas obras, a la generación del 98. Se le considera uno de los autores clave de la literatura española del siglo XX. Murió el 5 de enero de 1936 y por tanto sus obras ya forman parte del dominio público. En esta serie de libros vamos a reeditar en forma de ebook y tapa blanda los clásicos de siempre para hacerlos más accesibles al público en general.Aunque la Sonata de Invierno enlaza y continúa las "Memorias del Marqués de Bradomín", por su temática y ambientación tiende un puente con las novelas de La Guerra Carlista, que, a su vez, reiteran personajes y temas de las Comedias Bárbaras. De manera que la última Sonata se convierte en una obra clave en ese largo y continuado proceso de "sedimentación literaria", que va configurando un prisma de caras complementarias a través del cual Valle - Inclán ofrece su visión del carlismo.Con la Sonata de Invierno el escritor se enfrenta por primera vez a la historia y aborda con amplitud desusada hasta entonces la de la última guerra carlista. El argumento de la Sonata de Invierno se compone de un reducido número de episodios de carácter bélico sobre las que se dibujan las últimas aventuras amorosas del declinante y donjuanesco Marqués de Bradomín. Aunque en la Sonata de Invierno hay un predominio de la historia personal de Bradomín, no se puede infravalorar la presencia del tema carlista que, indudablemente, no es gratuita. La Sonata de Invierno no presenta una exposición programática del ideario carlista, sino una perspectiva histórica del carlismo mediante un sutil entrecruzamiento de hechos y personajes, ficticios y reales.Llama la atención de cualquier lector el aire de frustación, fracaso y nostalgia que recorre la Sonata de Invierno, lo cual se traduce en inactividad y desmoralización generalizadas. Es evidente que esta atmósfera no puede asociarse con el período anterior al segundo semestre de 1874, cuando el carlismo cosecha sus máximos triunfos militares, al apoderarse de la práctica totalidad de las provincias Vasco - Navarras.Bradomín es un Don Juan. Como al famoso tipo literario, le asaetea un constante erotismo alocado. El Modernismo supone como elemento primordial de su estructura un ininterrumpido combate contra el vulgarismo. Bradomín ha de escapar a toda norma: es admirable. Es feo, católico y sentimental. Tres cualidades en absoluto contraste entre ellas mismas y el tipo tradicional donjuanesco.Bradomín se nos ha presentado como un católico. Hace una preliminar confesión de fe. Con motivo del donjuanismo, observamos que su convicción religiosa no es muy de fiar. Aunque el catolicismo de Bradomín no es de fiar, sí que existe, tal como nos dice esta cita: "Después de una noche en lucha con el pecado y el insomnio, nada purifica el alma como bañarse en la oración y oír una misa al rayar el día. La oración entonces es también un rocío matinal y la calentura del Infierno se apaga con él. Yo, como he sido un gran pecador, aprendí esto en los albores de mi vida, y en aquella ocasión, no podía olvidarlo". El recuerdo de las cosas sagradas es para Bradomín un elemento más de autoexaltación y de decorativismo personalísimos. Así llueve sobre su destino perverso un tierno perfume de pureza.La superstición viene dada por la falta de religión verdadera. Es como un desahogo a las fuerzas del infierno: la hechicería, la brujería, el agüero, los sueños proféticos. Todo aquello que se escapa por los resquicios de la religión maltrecha. Bradomín, sin entregarse decididamente, cree unas veces en esta baratija, o, por lo menos, se deja influir por su clima trashumano.
