About the Book

*****"This is an easy-to-follow, epic tale of the epitome of Raam's life that gives insight and guidance on how to lead a virtuous life. Jiotty Kaushal has illustrated that the morals and principles practiced thousands of years ago have the same value, even today." - Ashwini Malhi, BBC Asian Network ***** ***** Highly commended by the President of the National Council of Hindu Temple Association UK (NCHTUK) Mr. B. M. Gupta MBE on his live TV show 'Let Us Talk Hinduism' January 2012 ***** This is an illustrated, poetic, easy-to-follow, complete version of the Ramayan in English. The Ramayan is a Hindu religious text and one of India's greatest epics. The original, written thousands of years ago by Valmeeki, has influenced and inspired generation after generation. The story revolves around a divine prince called Raam and follows his life. In his youth, Raam is a dutiful son fulfilling his father's ill-thought promise; to accept banishment for fourteen years. In exile, he is the noble prince; combating and defeating the evil demons (Asura) that tormented the good people. When his beautiful wife (Seeta) is taken captive by the demon King Raavan, Raam is the unstoppable husband who overcomes every obstacle to claim her back. Finally, as king, Raam is unwavering in his duty despite the cost. This adaptation is engaging and accessible to both adults and older children. 48 original colour illustrations brings the characters to life. This book is spellbinding and draws you into a distant magical world.
About the Author: As a child I loved the Ramayan. To me it was like a fairy tale...only true. Not having any books to refer to I remember drawing pictures of the characters; trying to create my own book. As I grew older I found the early English translations I read were unfulfilling. They lacked the devotional and moral perspective that I had come to know through hearing the story from my parents. The old Hindi films were glamorous but difficult to come by. Even then they were hard to enjoy as I spoke little Hindi and spent most of time asking, "What did they say?" The other problem I had was trying to rationalize the imagery of the characters. Ancient Indian ruins depicted sparsely clad figures that bore little resemblance to film actors and modern temple figures. So what did the people in the Ramayan really look like and how did they live? To find out more I started collecting pictures and researched ancient Indian art, carvings, paintings and costumes. It wasn't until years later I began writing this Ramayan. I wanted it to be as Valmeeki wrote it; in poetic verse. I wanted it to be illustrated with costumes and architecture of the period, and I wanted it to be something anyone - adults and children alike - could pick up and enjoy. I hope it is the Ramayan you've always wanted to read.
