About the Book

I'm offering this book - "(Some) Adventures in Old Age" - in the middle of our Covid-19 pandemic. It's about some adventures I've had, so far, in that "old age." (69 in 2020.) What makes the book timely? Just that in this day and age it's tough to do ANY traveling, let alone go overseas. Which brings up a point. I've often wondered why so many Americans in the 1920s and '30s were so fascinated by Ernest Hemingway's books on France and Spain. (Like "The Sun Also Rises" and "A Moveable Feast.") I'm guessing part of it was that back then most Americans could only DREAM of travel to such exotic places. (Like today with Covid.) Which makes me think this is a great time for this book. Right now, lots of Americans can only dream about visiting such exotic locales in the future, when the crisis passes. Besides, it's also nice - for now - just to remember all those past adventures, and for me to share them with you. Then too it may be because Hemingway gave all those exotic street names and local pubs and restaurants. Like my finding the "BeerBazaar," in Jerusalem, in May 2019. Which makes me think I should have written down way more information when I was "over there." Then I could do more what Hemingway did, vivid description. But I have something Hemingway didn't have. GOOGLE MAPS! On that note, Google Maps has the BeerBazaar on Etz Hayyim - I knew it as Jaffa Street - a 4-minute walk from Davidka Square. (That's where I found a liquor store my first Sunday in Jerusalem.) And there have been other memorable "pilgrimages" as well.Like hiking the Chilkoot Trail in 2016. ("Meanest 33 miles in history"). Or hiking the Camino de Santiago twice, the first time in 2017, from Pamplona - home of Hemingway's Café Iruna - the 450 miles to Santiago de Compostela. Then just last year - 2019 - hiking the Portuguese Camino, from Porto back up the Santiago. Another note: I learned in 2019 that they sell beer at the McDonalds' in Portugal. (Who says travel isn't broadening?)Speaking of that, I lead off with Chapter One, on seeing a "naked lady" sunbathing on the Yukon River. My brother and I were canoeing 440 miles down the Yukon River, from White Horse to Dawson City. (Covered in 12 days.) And the Yukon River was the last place I expected to see something like that.A more recent adventure was that May 2019 trip to Jerusalem. "THE trip of a lifetime," based at St. George's College - and Pilgrim Guest House - at the apex of Nablus and Salah-e-Din Streets. From that central location my fellow pilgrims and I visited other great places in Israel: Tel Aviv, Nazareth, Bethlehem, and more... And one chapter (Five, "St. James, Steinbeck, and sluts") helps explain "Why the hell would you do such a thing?" (Like fly to Israel.)One memory. May 28, 2019, Tel Aviv. The night before I fly home from Ben Gurion. Sitting at the bar in the basement of the Abraham Hostel, Levon St. 21. To my left, two travel buddies, Sam and Katie. Katie on my immediate left, Sam one seat over. To my right a young man who turned out to be a law student from Quebec. We got to talking, and I asked his name. He said "Silas." So I started singing "Two was a-Paul and Silas!" Katie chimed in, "One was a little bitty baby," then we both sang - in harmony - "Born, born, born in Bethlehem!"That's from the song "Children, Go Where I Send Thee." (For a kick-ass a capela version, see the version by Little Big Town.) The point is that after my two 2019 pilgrimages - Israel in May and Portugal/Spain in September - I definitely got bit by the "Travel Overseas Adventure" bug. Then the Covid hit...But it won't last forever, so some time in the future I'll be able to "Go [back] where He sends me."In the meantime I'll have my book of memories, and now so will you.And by the way, that cover photo? It shows me in Jerusalem wearing a "shemagh," from Ranger Joe's in Ft. Benning. Over my black Atlanta United ball cap. (The best of the old and the new...)
