Der Titel "Der Soldat und das Mädchen Monique, Fahnenflucht in den Ardennen 1944" ist ein positiv gestimmter Roman einer Fahnenflucht aus der Hölle der Ardennen-Schlacht im Winter 1944, in dem das Kriegsgeschehen in krassem Gegensatz zu der zarten Liebesgeschichte steht, die sich zwischen dem deutschen Deserteur und der hübschen Belgierin Monique entwickelt. Dabei haben die Kampfereignisse im ersten Teil des Buches authentischen Charakter und spiegeln viele Eindrücke des Autors bei seinen Einsätzen als Soldat. "Als ich das Buch "Mit 16 zu jung zu sterben" fertig hatte, war mein Kopf noch voll von den wieder aufgeweckten Erinnerungen an die schlimmsten Tage meines Lebens. Überhaupt hat sich vieles durch das Schreiben in meinem Leben verändert, das eigentlich lediglich dazu beitragen sollte, alles, was mit Gewalt und Krieg zusammen hängt schon im Keim zu ersticken. Manchmal bin ich froh, dass ich das Geschehen über lange Zeiten meines Lebens verdrängen konnte und die schönen, positiven Ereignisse in den Vordergrund rückten. Andererseits ist es gut, dass ich durch die Anregungen meiner Urenkel einiges von dem gesagt habe, was wahrscheinlich immer tief in mir rumort hat und das heraus wollte. Trotzdem war ich nicht ganz zufrieden, weil im ersten Buch das Geschehen in meiner Jugend so alternativlos wirkt und ja auch von vielen Menschen in dieser Weise als Ausrede für ihren begrenzten Widerspruch benutzt wird. In unserer Verwandtschaft gibt es einen Mann, der als deutscher Soldat in Frankreich desertiert ist und mit der Hilfe freundlicher Menschen und vor allem einer liebenden Frau ein neues Leben dort gefunden hat. Von Charlie und seiner Frau Helene hab ich viel erfahren und ihr Geschichte hat mich veranlasst, dieses Buch als Gedankenspiel niederzuschreiben. Es gibt immer Alternativen!"
