Nei primi anni del nuovo millennio, in risposta alle crescenti preoccupazioni ambientali e a un sostanziale disinteresse della politica, dell'economia e del design contemporanei verso le disuguaglianze sociali, le ingiustizie climatiche e le derive del capitalismo della sorveglianza, è emerso un movimento estetico, letterario e culturale rivolto a un futuro alternativo detto Solarpunk: tale corrente affonda naturalmente le sue radici nel Cyberpunk anni '80, nella fantascienza speculativa eco/climatica e nella letteratura post-industriale degli anni '90; l'elemento "punk", rappresenta quindi un'opposizione e al tempo stesso una proposta alternativa sia all'ingenuo utopismo aziendale portato avanti dall'ecomodernismo sia al distopismo generalizzato che hanno dominato gran parte del XX secolo.

Di fatto, il Solarpunk promuove una visione positiva, costruttiva e speranzosa verso un futuro inclusivo, radicato nelle tecnologie attuali e nella cultura della sostenibilità senza auspicare nostalgici ritorni a un primitivismo dell'Età dell'Oro; tuttavia riconosce che ci saranno dei cambiamenti drammatici nel nostro modo di vivere, proprio a causa del riscaldamento globale e della cattiva gestione ambientale del passato. La transizione verso un'infrastruttura basata sulle energie rinnovabili e il crollo dei paradigmi dell'era industriale necessita di un approccio nuovo, capace tanto di "decarbonizzare" e "decapitalizzare" le modalità di produzione e distribuzione delle merci quanto di "rigenerare" le condizioni necessarie a resistere agli sconvolgimenti in arrivo. Prepararsi al futuro è il modo migliore per affrontare il presente.

Biografie degli autori
Eric Hunting è un saggista e futurologo, che s'interessa in particolare di architettura alternativa e sostenibile, energie rinnovabili, tecnologie dell'informazione, sviluppo marino e spaziale, e cultura post-industriale. Ha scritto molto su temi legati all'edilizia non tossica e high-tech, nonché sull'informatica e sulla progettazione di computer di nuova generazione, lavorando per iniziative IT e insieme a sviluppatori di prodotti per l'edilizia domestica a componenti modulari. È stato membro della Living Universe Foundation e autore del progetto Wiki TMP2 - una revisione del programma di sviluppo marino e spaziale The Millennial Project originariamente ideato da Marshall T. Savage.
