Sodome et Gomorrhe est une pièce en deux actes et en prose de Jean Giraudoux (1882-1944), créée à Paris au théâtre Hébertot le 11 octobre 1943 sur une musique de scène d'Arthur Honegger, et publiée à Paris chez Grasset la même année.Les malheurs publics et privés, la défaite de 1939 et la mésentente conjugale, conduisent Giraudoux à la relecture de deux épisodes sombres de la Bible. Dans la Genèse (18 et 19), Abraham s'aventure dans un marchandage célèbre avec Yahvé Sodome et Gomorrhe, les villes pécheresses, seront sauvées s'il s'y trouve cinquante, puis vingt, puis dix justes. Ce nombre ne pouvant être réuni, elles périssent sous un déluge de feu. D'autre part, le livre des Juges (16) raconte comment Dalila extorque à Samson le secret de sa force et profite de son sommeil pour lui couper les cheveux, le réduisant ainsi à l'impuissance et à la servitude. Sans se soucier de la chronologie biblique, l'auteur rassemble les deux passages en les réinterprétant très librement.Ébauchée dans l'hiver 1938-1939, la pièce est remaniée en 1940-1941, puis achevée en 1942.L'Archange des archanges explique au Jardinier pourquoi la colère divine menace les habitants de Sodome et Gomorrhe: ils ne respectent pas la seule base que Dieu ait glissée sous leur vie, [...] celle du couple. Il ne reste qu'un espoir de trouver le couple heureux qui les sauverait: puisque Samson et Dalila sont en voyage, il faut s'en remettre à Jean et Lia (Prélude). Ceux-ci ont invité leurs amis Jacques et Ruth et les deux femmes se font des confidences: elles n'aiment plus leurs maris. A l'arrivée des deux hommes, Lia, sur sa lancée, accuse violemment Jean d'esquiver toute explication. La présence de l'Ange, venu les épier, le pousse cette fois à accepter la discussion; mais c'est pour constater, et l'échec de son union, et son penchant pour Ruth. La réponse de Lia ne se fait pas attendre: elle déclare qu'elle veut le quitter pour vivre avec Jacques. Jean tente alors vainement de la retenir et, humilié à son tour, part avec Ruth, tandis que Lia cherche auprès de l'Ange une alternative à son amour déçu pour les hommes. Mesurant vite ce que cette tentative a d'impossible, elle se rabat sur Jacques. La catastrophe approche: tout doit mourir, même dans le jardin, sauf une rose rouge que le jardinier obtient de sauver (Acte I).Que faire de cette rose? Le jardinier s'interroge sur sa mission. Cependant Ruth a décidé de se sacrifier pour le salut de tous; il ne lui reste qu'à persuader Jean de revenir à Lia. Le retour inopiné de Samson et Dalila vient ranimer l'espoir. Mais l'épreuve des faits infirme leur renommée de couple heureux: Dalila a fait de son époux son esclave. Jean et Lia, qui restent le seul recours, constatent sans le comprendre l'échec de leur amour. C'est l'Ange qui, dans une dernière tentative, persuade Lia de se réconcilier avec son époux; mais, blessée une fois encore, elle refuse d'attendre la mort à ses côtés. Hommes et femmes se séparent sans cesser de se déchirer tandis que s'abat sur eux le déluge de feu du châtiment divin (Acte II).
