The capacity to observe, interpret and understand human behaviour is vital for effective social work practice. The proposed book will cover the key theories of human growth and development in the context of social relationships and is intended to provide a frame of reference from which to explore various facets of human behaviour that are particularly relevant to students' preparedness to practice social work with complex populations. The book will address factors such as attachment, developmental status, context, culture, diversity, trauma, and oppression. By drawing from psychological, sociological and biological perspectives, the book's aim is to provide social work students with a theoretically informed basis to observe, understand, and interpret people's behaviours in ways that will contribute to excellent practice.. . Human Behaviour (or Human Development/Lifespan Development) is a compulsory core module for all first year social work undergraduates. This text will be core reading for those courses and, as such, has the potential to be the market leader. The module provides underpinning knowledge and understanding for Key Roles 1, 2, 4 and 6 of the GSCC National Occupational Standards for Social Work and also for the QAA graduate benchmarks for Social Work and Social Policy. Students needs to be able to demonstrate knowledge of a range of theoretical approaches to the understanding of human growth and development including physical, psychological and atypical development. They need to be able to apply these perspectives across the life cycle starting with infancy and childhood and moving through to adolescence, early adulthood, middle and old age. Lastly, they need to developthe ability to apply this knowledge to practice situations faced in health and social care settings. .
. The text will include exercises, discussion questions and chapter summary points. The text has the potenial to be accompanied by a relatively low level OLC including lecture notes and case studies for teaching purposes. This would set it apart from its competitors and is a point for further discussion. .
