About the Book

The work of S.P. Sathe profoundly influenced the discourse on public law and social justice in contemporary India, and helped to raise the quality of law teaching and research in the country. He avoided jargon and remained steadfast in his dedication to the 'demystification' of public law. Much of his work revolved around his sustained analysis of the relationship between social justice and the judicial process, the functioning of the Indian Supreme Court and its interpretation of various constitutional provisions. This volume brings together for the first time a thematic selection of his essays, published over a period of almost five decades in law journals, Indian and international, and books, his lectures, and newspaper articles. They address a wide range of themes, especially relevant today when the demand for propriety in public life, transparency in governance, and the prevention of the abuse of the criminal justice system has become increasingly urgent.
