About the Book

Social exclusion is as old as society of India. It persists across the world. In contemporary period, it has rapidly increased in various domains of India including social, cultural, economic, educational and political. Thus, Social Exclusion and Status Formation among Dalits unveils various facets of exclusion, discrimination, deprivation and even exploitation in the context of Indian society faced by Dalits. Furthermore, it provides comprehensive account of empirical evidences based on social exclusion and status of Dalits as well as formation of status in the social hierarchy that exists in the Hindu caste system. It also examines their changing pattern of relationship with different caste groups, especially Bihar after independence. In this regard, caste system, an ascribed status, plays very dominant nature of exclusion against Dalits worldwide. Most significantly, both caste and class statuses of Dalits do contribute in the formation of a new type of social status among them.
