About the Author: Gene Harris began his writing career while attending the University of Oklahoma with an evening job as a news writer for an Oklahoma City television station. Subsequently he became writer producer of documentary features before leaving for Houston in 1968. After a tenure as writer/producer for KHOU-TV, Harris joined the staff of a natural gas corporation as senior writer, during which time he traveled extensively, providing articles for both corporate publications and the national press. In 1972 Harris began his free-lance career, establishing himself as one of the premier corporate and business writers in the country (in 1985 he was named as one of the 10 best business writers by the International Association of Business Communicators). During this period he also became interested in fiction, but it wasn't until after his marriage that he actively began to pursue this form of writing. During the early 1980's, he and his wife traveled extensively in South America (his wife, Cassandra, was born in New Orleans but raised in Ecuador) where he began collecting interviews from individuals that would eventually form the foundation for the characters in Wings of the Fly. Alternately working on his fiction and his vocation, Harris has since produced several historical non-fiction works, two of which were published by business concerns. One, The People Machine, follows the development of GTE telephone service in South Florida, and is considered an academic publication. The second, The Shadowmakers, is a history of radiology, and was published in 1995 by Starline Press (2,000 copies) of Albuquerque, N.M. This hard-bound table book is now in its second printing.
