Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Technische Systeme werden heute im Lernumfeld immer häufiger eingesetzt und ihre technischen Möglichkeiten laufend modernisiert. Die Ziele und die Wirkung auf die Lerneffizienz werden jedoch nicht weiter hinterfragt. So kommt es, dass schon von einer "Krise in der Lernsoftware" gesprochen wird, da oft nur ein kurzfristiger Einsatz aufgrund des Neuheitseffektes initiiert werden konnte. Große Hoffnungen setzt man nun auf das Lernen in Computernetzen, z. B. via Internet, und arbeitet intensiv an den technischen Möglichkeiten der unterstützenden Lernsysteme. In dieser Arbeit wird nun detailliert aufgezeigt, welche differenzierten, technischen Anforderungen an die Systeme gestellt werden müssen, gemäss den pädagogischen Zielen, die sich an den verschiedenen Lernaspekten und den grundlegenden Bildungskonzepten orientieren. Auch bei rasantem, technischen Fortschritt werden diese Ausführungen als Grundlage für den Entwurf einer technisch unterstützten (verteilten) Lernumgebung ihre Bedeutung beibehalten. Ein Kapitel über die Leistungsfähigkeit und die Grenzen des heutigen Internet mit seinen Benutzungsmöglichkeiten gibt vorab einen Überblick über den derzeitigen Stand der Technik. Erfahrungen des Interneteinsatzes (und Computernetzen) im Lernumfeld werden anhand vieler Projekte internationaler Universitäten und privater Ausbildungs-institute dokumentiert und die Lösungen ihrer technischen Umsetzungen erörtert. Drei Online-Universitäten, das "Electronic College of Computer-Science" (Norwegen), die "Virtual Summer School of the Open University" (Großbritannien) und die "Virtuelle Universität der Fernuniversität Hagen" (Deutschland) werden abschließend in ihrer Gesamtkonzeption vorgestellt.
