Doch auch in einem entchristlichten, säkularen oder laizistischen Europa wird die frühneuzeitliche Konfessionalisierung fortwirken und daher weiterhin die Aufmerksamkeit der Historiker finden. Denn in der Frühzeit der europäischen Moderne war sie einer der mächtigsten Motoren politischer und kultureller Differenzierung, und in einem sehr komplexen Geschehen trieb sie längerfristig sogar die Säkularisierung voran. Der durch Rationalität, Säkularität und Toleranz charakterisierte europäische Zivilisationstypus der Gegenwart ist ohne die Konfessionalisierung des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts nicht vorstellbar." Der Aktualitätsbezug der Konfessionalisierungsforschung ist nicht immer augenfällig und versteckt sich unter für den heutigen Betrachter alltäglich gewordenen politischen und sozialen Geschehen. Diese sind jedoch unter anderem Resultate verschiedener frühneuzeitlicher Prozesse. Die Konklusion lautet also, zeitgenössische Zeugnisse dieser Prozesse in den Blickpunkt historischer Forschung zu rücken. Thema dieser Arbeit ist das Epitaph für Moritz von Donop, welches dem lippischen Ritter zu Ehren 1587 gestiftet wurde und sich in der St. Nicolai-Kirche in Lemgo befindet. Das Erkenntnisinteresse an diesem Epitaph, welches das cranachsche Motiv "Gesetz und Gnade" aufgreift, basiert auf der Frage nach dem Zusammenhang mit dem und der Bedeutung für den Prozess der lutherischen Konfessionalisierung in Lippe und Lemgo. Die Leitfrage für die folgende Untersuchung soll sein, warum zu diesem späten Zeitpunkt das alte reformat
