Una personalidad multifacética como la de Leonardo Da Vinci, nos dice Rodó, pero en otro contexto: la independencia de Suramérica.Al estudiar a Simón Bolívar, la mayoría de investigaciones se centran en los aspectos de militar y de estadista, relegando para unos pocos bolivarianos otras facetas como su amor por el arte, la filosofía, la lectura y la escritura.Como escritor, Simón Bolívar nos legó ensayos brillantes como "La Carta de Jamaica", "El Manifiesto de Cartagena" o "El Discurso de Angostura" que son considerados la esencia del pensamiento bolivariano, vigente aún hoy en día. Además escribió infinidad de cartas y proclamas con un estilo único e inconfundible. Simón Bolívar sólo, escribió más que todos los otros próceres de Latinoamérica juntos.Se desconoce, así mismo, la utilidad y la influencia que tuvo la prensa en las batallas del Libertador y el valor que éste mismo le daba. Simón Bolívar decía que la imprenta era su "artillería del pensamiento" como ha apuntado Felipe Larrazábal.En consecuencia, la presente investigación pretende visibilizar precisamente estos aspectos casi desconocidos del Libertador: el de escritor, periodista y fundador de periódicos.De esta manera, Simón Bolívar fundó en 1818 el Correo del Orinoco, periódico fundamental para la creación de Colombia, cuya publicación cesó en 1822, a vísperas de la independencia de Suramérica, donde el Libertador sostuvo resonantes polémicas con la prensa realista bajo diversos seudónimos. Se considera al Correo del Orinoco como el principal órgano de la guerra intelectual del Libertador.Además, Simón Bolívar fundó periódicos como El Peruano, decano de la prensa del Perú hasta nuestros días. Ahí escribió infinidad de cartas, ensayos y críticas literarias. Creó directamente decenas de periódicos durante su gesta heroica o sus sugerencias y artículos tuvieron influencia en decenas de periódicos patriotas. Por tanto, la presente compilación de documentos pretende dar una idea amplia del Libertador Simón Bolívar como genial escritor y padre del periodismo en Suramérica.En el texto se encuentran citados cada periódico fundado por el Libertador o donde tuvo acogida sus ideas libertarias, un análisis riguroso de su estilo literario y ejemplos de cada una de sus obras como las citadas cartas esenciales, poemas, biografías, etc.Por último, se intenta demostrar que la guerra en todos los tiempos ha sido también de propaganda, en el caso de las de la independencia americana, una guerra ya enmarcada en el modernismo, lo fue a través de medios escritos. Y ahora la mayoría de los medios de comunicación mantienen y fomentan el estatus quo. Aquí se demuestra como Bolívar también tuvo que enfrentar a este mismo poder fáctico.De esta manera, se presentan facetas nuevas del Libertador, para llenar de orgullo a nuestros pueblos por pertenecer a la Patria por la que luchó, un héroe de la fabulosa envergadura de guerrero, de estadista, de filósofo y, como se demuestra en este libro, de escritor y periodista.
