About the Book

Meet Jimmy Mansfield. He's the ringmaster of a family vacation circus at sea. Jimmy, a 40 something large and in charge lawyer, has a guilt attack after seeing a silver alert. (Full disclosure: he's an ambulance chaser but the money's good and it helps pay his wife's never ending Botox bills.)Jimmy decides it's time to take his aging parents on a cruise. He and his wife Marcie pick the Silver Serenity-which he dubs the Silver Senility. Together the Mansfields navigate through eye watering mishaps and hilarious misadventures that challenge Jimmy's take control attitude and bring the goodness out in Marcie. Silver Vacation is a character driven fast paced, funny and heartwarming story of a family cruise vacation. Trouble begins even before the Mansfields leave the house. Dad has his golf clubs, mom her little emotional support dog Priscilla. Spirited dialogue with the TSA agents, gate agents and flight crew puts Jimmy in a state of anxiety that continues during the five days at sea. And, on one occasion, in the sea. Jimmy is a bit of a control freak and as much as he tries to let that go, it takes him the week to accept that having a good time is in the eyes of the person who actually thinks they are having a good time. The Mansfields spend most of their time together and just enough time with their eclectic tablemates. Their lives intersect in seemingly impossible ways. There's Nigel from Cornwall-very British, Anne the sex therapist, Carmen from Cuba who carries an elegantly framed photo of her dead son Fernando everywhere and Justice Merriweather, connoisseur of fine champagne who spent the last 20 years of his life imprisoned for a Madoff style crime he didn't commit (wink, wink). Rounding out the group is Duchess Paramour who is in the process of a sex change. Duchess becomes Marcie's science project. They all become best friends-at least for 5 days. Sort of. Each port of call brings another misadventure. And ship's activities keep everyone busy. Thanks to the obscure but explainable knowledge of their team "Who's your daddy?" they win Jeopardy by a landslide. Lucky in two categories- Jailbirds and Kind of a Drag. Of course, the horseback riding is fun and dad especially enjoys his ride on Danny the spirited pinto. And, in a tender moment, they help Carmen come to closure on Fernando's death 27 years ago by scattering his ashes in the blue waters of the Pacific. He always wanted to go on a cruise. The ceremony doesn't go quite as planned but they did their best. Besides, Fernando was probably tired of spending what probably seemed like an eternity in a Manolo Blahnik shoebox in his mom's closet. The grand finale on board gives passengers a chance to show their song and dance moves in a rendition of Fame. There are not enough words here to describe that whole process. Team Mansfield re-discovers the magic of relationships, love and personal triumph (dad doesn't really need the Viagra). In the end they realize that people are truly a gift- some more than others. This trip is good for everyone but especially for Jimmy. He'd almost forgotten about the heart. Welcome aboard the Silver Senility!
