About the Book

The story resumes from the end of Independence Pass and joins a young man, Daniel's, desperate search to reunite with his lost mother and sister. We find he and Kate heading to their wedding reception when Daniel is shocked to see his cabin ablaze and then later discovers that the money stolen from the bank in Leadville is gone.Three years have passed, Daniel and Kate have a daughter and he is now a junior manager at Jerome B. Wheeler's mining company and is chosen to accompany Wheeler and the Silver Queen to the Chicago World's Fair, despite strong arguments that the trip would place a heavy burden on Daniel's young family.Harry Rich, Daniel's ex-partner, is kidnapped at gun point by Hamlett Kincaid who demands the money promised to Doc Holliday. Unable to produce the money, Harry is forced to accompany Hamlett to Aspen and is stunned to find his cabin burned and the money from the bank robbery gone. Hamlett and Harry follow Daniel to Chicago.Unknown to Daniel, his older brother, Patrick, has escaped from an English prison and has arrived in New York with a vengeful Irish detective in hot pursuit. The city is cruel and after a week in the gutters a desperate Patrick is rescued by kindly monks and he allows himself to be seduced by one of them, blackmail being his plan. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act is repealed thus destroying the nation's silver industry so Wheeler orders Daniel back to Chicago to pack up the Silver Queen for its return to Aspen. But Daniel seizes the opportunity and risking everything to find his mother and sister, races to New York unaware that bounty hunters are awaiting him.On arriving in New York, Daniel befriends a Jewish cab driver who suspects that Daniel is in danger and helps Daniel's family elude the bounty hunters until they can board a morning train to Chicago.Ejected from the monk's residence for his misconduct, Patrick is taken in by a family close to the church. Their daughter, Gemma, helps him track down his family using her underworld connections. During his search, Patrick is unaware that the Irish detective is closing in on him, using different but similar methods.Patrick and Gemma follow the bounty hunter onto Daniel's train heading to Chicago. Reunited with his family, Patrick and Daniel assess the growing danger and contrive a plan to elude the bounty hunter following them.Concerned about Daniel's disappearance Shirley, Kate and Red arrive in Chicago and are mystified when they see him running away from them. After following him to Wheeler's private train car Kate bursts in expecting to find him with a whore but is surprised when she finds him with his family who were previously unknown to her.Outside the train car, Red catches Harry eavesdropping and he confesses his part in Hamlett's plan to kidnap Daniel. As a result, Daniel is forced to explain the appearance of his family and admit that he and Harry really did rob the bank. Kate is disappointed. Harry then discovers that Wheeler wants Hamlett to stand trial for Joe's murder.Wheeler loads the Silver Queen onto his personal train with Harry and Hamlett unhappily locked up on board. But they are surprised when the Irish detective appears on their train wanting to arrest Daniel and Patrick. Wheeler cleverly entices the detective into a high-stakes poker game where they gamble for Daniel and Patrick's freedom against the tremendous value of Wheeler's silver statue. But the bounty hunter is also aboard and frees Hamlett.
