Este nostálgico proyecto se convierte en un intenso recorrido donde siguen los pasos de los protagonistas y a la vez reflejan sus propios momentos: los inexpertos gestos políticos contra un autoritario Hugo Chávez en Caracas, la vida suspendida en La Habana, la caribeña isla de Puerto Rico y Nueva York fascinante en dos tiempos, igualmente sus desesperados intentos por convivir con la infidelidad de los respectivos maridos.

Trazan el matrimonio de Zenobio y Juan Ramón en pleno invierno en la ciudad de Nueva York y, ya de vuelta, los paseos por El Retiro, el trabajo conjunto en la obra del poeta y los proyectos de Zenobia con Inés Muñoz y Constancia de la Mora; Arte Popular y el alquiler de pisos. Mientras, es inevitable que se pongan al día sobre lo que les sucede a ellas: los inexpertos gestos políticos contra un autoritario Chávez en Venezuela y los desesperados intentos de convivir con la infidelidad patológica de los maridos.

Luego cambia la vida en España y Zenobia sigue a Juan Ramón hacia el obligado exilio, ellas también viajan: la visita a La Habana actual de los Castro va contando La Habana de Zenobia, la del reparto del Vedado con Dulce María Loynaz, la del Hotel Nacional con Elena Mestre, la desesperación por vivir confinada en la isla de Lezama Lima. La búsqueda de trabajo para sobrevivir y la necesidad de más espacio motiva el traslado a un Miami que pronto les queda pequeño, por eso, todos los años viajan hacia el norte, se detienen en San Agustín donde Ponce de León buscó la Fuente de la Juventud, disfrutan del entorno profesional de la universidad de Duke, pasan por la capital antes de llegar a Nueva York, y en ese devenir, por fin Zenobia encuentra lo que busca y logra instalarse en el ambiente social de Washington, pero al poco tiempo el poeta necesita un lugar más tranquilo y terminan dando clases en la Universidad de Maryland. Juan Ramón no resiste vivir en otra lengua y su malestar motiva la vuelta a Puerto Rico.

La desventura de un exilio verdadero gobernado por el desvarío interactúa con la desventura del exilio interior de otras dos mujeres que luchan por una vida auténtica.

El desenlace se produce en Puerto Rico, allí muere Zenobia sabiendo que Juan Ramón lo ha logrado, ha llegado a la cima, ha ganado el Premio Nobel. Pero la historia se acaba para ella. Allí se despiden las amigas con una vida por resolver que las aguarda y con el sinsabor de no saber si Zenobia se fue contenta con su vida.
