Drew scrambled over the top of the rock and took up a position. He pulled the rifle out of the bag and locked a round in the chamber. He dropped to a shooter's position-on his stomach. With his left hand, he dropped the small bipod attached to the barrel end and sighted. It was not a night vision scope, but he was close enough to the targets and had enough moonlight to make out the outline of any body. His heart rate was still elevated, and he knew that he would have to lower it before shooting.

Drew went back to his training. He closed his eyes for two seconds. Clear your mind, he told himself. He let out a deep, cleansing breath and opened his eyes. He scanned the area where he had seen Katie running. He followed the path with the scope until he saw the two figures nearing the road. The one in front was a female. The male pursuer was gaining. No time to think. No time to consider technical aspects to the shot: wind, distance, elevation, humidity. No time to think about the fact that he had never fired this weapon. Even if he had a spotter, there was no time to consult about drop and angles. The only thing to consider was that Katie was running for her life. The only thing for him to believe was that he was a weapon.
