Esta aristocrática y atractiva actriz comenzó usando el nombre Sigourney (sacado de un personaje de "El Gran Gatsby") en la primera década de 1960. Hija del anterior presidente de la NBC, Sylvester "Pat" Weaver, y la actriz Elizabeth Inglis, se graduó en la escuela de Arte Dramático de Yale un año antes que también lo hiciera Meryl Streep. Su primera salida a un escenario fue en Nueva York, en una obra dirigida por Sir John Gielgud titulada "La esposa constante" y que debería haber sido interpretada por Ingrid Bergman. Una vez terminado su contrato realizó su primer pequeño trabajo en el cine, en la película "Madman" (1978), dirigida por Dan Cohen. Casi simultáneamente interpretó, por considerarlo de algún modo, un pequeño papel en "Annie Hall" de Woody Allen (1977), en donde si tenemos buena y sagaz visión la vislumbraremos como una joven que está en la fila de un cine, mientras Woody y Diane discuten sobre los problemas sexuales que la menstruación produce en ella. Al año siguiente intervino también en cortos papeles en diferentes obras de Broadway, como "Gemini" y en varios otros espectáculos, apareciendo en la telenovela "Somerset." Su altura de 1,83 cm. le ha impedido a veces intervenir en determinados papeles. Weaver alcanzó bruscamente su categoría de gran estrella como la heroína tenaz del thriller de Ciencia-Ficción de Ridley Scott, "Alien"(1979), y pudo revivir su personaje en "Aliens" (1986), y "Alien 3" (1992.) En 1996 anunció que volvería a interpretar el mismo personaje, con la joven actriz Winona Ryder, en el tentativamente titulada, "Alien: La Resurrección." Weaver también probó sus credenciales dramáticas serias haciendo pareja con Mel Gibson en el drama político "El año que vivimos peligrosamente" (1983), y consiguió poco a poco llegar a ser una de las estrellas femeninas de Hollywood más destacadas de la década de 1980. Posteriormente adopta un papel menos encantador, como la víctima vengativa de una tortura política en el filme de Román Polanski "La Muerte de la Doncella" (1994), y como una psicóloga de delitos especialmente sangrientos que sufre terribles crisis fóbicas a salir al exterior, en "Copycat" (1995), junto a Holly Hunter. Weaver también interpretó a una nueva evangelista madura en la comedia "Jeffrey" (también en 1995), donde Paul Rudnick nos realiza una recreación agradable de los homosexuales. Después de una larga relación sentimental con el actor/dramaturgo James McClure, Weaver se casó con el director Jim Simpson en 1984, quien la dirigió en las obras de teatro "Old Times" (1981) y "El mercader de Venecia" (1986-87). En mayo de 1990 nacería su hija Charlotte.
