Sigmund Freud est né le 6 mai 1856 à Freiberg, en Moravie (aujourd'hui Pribor), en Autriche-Hongrie. Il est l'aîné de huit enfants nés de parents juifs, tous deux descendants d'une longue lignée de rabbins. Son père était un homme d'affaires sans succès et sa mère était issue d'une famille de commerçants prospères depuis des générations.


Il n'est pas surprenant qu'il se soit intéressé aux études de médecine à l'université de Vienne, car elles combinaient deux choses qu'il aimait - la science et la littérature. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme de docteur en médecine avec les honneurs en 1881, il passa plusieurs années à travailler comme chercheur sous la direction du professeur Ernst von Brücke à l'Institut de physiologie de l'université. En 1886, Freud publie Études sur l'hystérie, qui le rend célèbre parmi les intellectuels et les médecins européens, mais qui suscite également une certaine inquiétude chez ceux qui estiment que ses théories pourraient être trop radicales, voire dangereuses. En 1895, il commence à publier L'interprétation des rêves, qui deviendra l'une de ses oeuvres les plus importantes et le rendra mondialement célèbre du jour au lendemain lors de sa parution en 1900, après avoir été retardé par des problèmes de censure depuis 1899. Il épousa Martha Bernays le 14 juillet 1886 et ils eurent six enfants ensemble avant qu'elle ne meure inopinément au cours de sa septième grossesse en 1896; cet événement conduisit à ce qui a été appelé "le grand tournant" dans la vie de Freud, lorsqu'il abandonna tout espoir de travail scientifique.

Carl Gustav Jung était un psychiatre et psychothérapeute suisse qui a fondé la psychologie analytique. Il a également été un penseur influent dans les domaines de l'archéologie, de l'anthropologie, de la religion comparée, de la littérature et de la parapsychologie. Son travail a été controversé pendant de nombreuses années car il a rompu avec les théories de Freud sur l'inconscient et a développé ses propres concepts d'archétypes et de conscience collective.
