About the Book

English summary: In World War 2, Pforzheim was the most destroyed city in Germany compared to its population, with only a few houses remaining intact. Given the situation, reconstruction was seen as an opportunity to try out experimental concepts in modern town planning. Within this context controversial mission statements and proposals began competing with one another: cultural forum versus car-friendly city, citizens' city versus business city, radical new start versus memory. The process of reconstruction was by no means linear. However, especially in the 1950's and 60's Pforzheim produced a number of groundbreaking buildings, which are discussed here along with post-war town planning, the struggle for the new city and the people who played decisive roles, namely Professor Otto Ernst Schweizer from Karlsruhe, the Director of City Planning Kurt Kaiser and the mayor Johann Peter Brandenburg. Juni - 15. November
