About the Book

English summary: How does political participation of a 'minority' begin? Between the mid-1840s and 1919, women were, regardless of advancing social changes, largely refused the right to speak up in the areas of public speech making, legal self-determination and the vote. Publishing autobiographic material gave them an opportunity to bring their own voices into public discourse. With such speech they gave themselves a voice in society and a means to literally voice their opinion on the question of women's rights, on social issues and on colonialism and war. This study which analyzes the literary and non-literary personal accounts of five women from three generations provides an insight into the social dimension of textual self-construction and the acquisition of 'agency' despite exclusion. The connection of a literary, gender historical and political approach provides new impulses for interdisciplinary research on personal accounts and autobiographies.
