Gleichzeitig verbinden sich mit Sibirien bedrückende Gedanken an Verbannung, Straflager und Zwangsarbeit - nicht ohne Grund ist Sibirien als 'das größte Gefängnis' der Welt bezeichnet worden. Riesig ist auch der Reichtum Sibiriens an Bodenschätzen, vor allem an Erdöl, Erdgas, Steinkohle, Gold und Diamanten. Bevor sie Sibirien zur Schatzkammer des Russischen Reiches und seiner Nachfolgestaaten machten, erwies sich ein anderer Schatz der Natur als Magnet von höchster Anziehungskraft: der Reichtum an Pelztieren. Er war einer der mächtigsten Anreize für die Eroberung Sibiriens durch die Russen. Sie begann im späten 16. Jahrhundert in der Regierungszeit Ivans IV. Seit dem ersten Vordringen gehörten der zivilisatorische Anspruch, die behauptete Überlegenheit der Russen zu den Gründen für die Rechtfertigung der Eroberung. Sibirien galt schon bald nicht mehr als Kolonie, sondern als genuiner Bestandteil des Reiches. Zu den Opfern der Kolonisierung gehörten vor allem die Ureinwohner Sibiriens, die zahlenmäßig zu schwach waren und aus zu vielen unterschiedlichen Völkerschaften bestanden, um sich erfolgreich zur Wehr setzen zu können. Dieses Spannungsverhältnis zwischen russischer Eroberung und den Lebensbedingungen und Überlebensstrategien der indigenen Bevölkerung ist ein zentrales Thema des Buches. Ein weiteres großes Thema ist die industrielle Erschließung und Ausbeutung des Landes, die in der sowjetischen Zeit ohne jede Rücksicht auf Mensch und Natur bis zum Extrem forciert wurde, ein Raubbau, der in seiner bis heute fortwirkenden Gigantomanie eine beeindruckende und reiche natürliche Umwelt an den Rand der völligen Zerstörung getrieben hat. Das bedrohte Naturwunder des Baikalsees ist nur ein Beispiel dafür.
