Decide buscar oro cuando se levanta una mañana,

Se convertirá en buscadores de oro a lo largo de un pequeño arroyo que intenta, sin convencerse, convertirse en torrente. Planta una tienda de campaña cerca de unas ruinas, algunos guijarros, algo de vegetación, está convencido de que está en el Jardín del Edén. Los monjes españoles quedan sorprendidos por su presencia, vuelve sobre sus pasos. Aquí está otra vez más allá de la ruina, sin duda su razón está fallando.

Por la noche aparece un hombre, James lo encuentra extraño. Come tocino, que unta con jarabe de arce. Fuman un cigarrillo liado, James regresa al pasado que le gustaría olvidar. Como una migraña, ella lo revive.

Unos días más tarde, un cheyenne se le une y le cuenta las leyendas indias. Maheo, la Araña que construyó el universo. Lo escucha fascinado. Nunca se dio cuenta del magnetismo de la cultura nativa americana sobre él.
Pamela, la cheyenne, Gladys, el viejo, los monjes españoles, todo se agita en su interior.
