En un país dividido, dominado por la violencia y las guerras internas entre clanes, cuyos señores se enfrascaban en enfrentamientos sangrientos por ver quien salía vencedor y hacerse con el poder en el Japón, surgieron numerosos líderes valientes y audaces, algunos de los cuales como Oda Nobunaga y Toyotomi Hideyoshi casi alcanzaron su sueño de unificar y gobernar el país, pero solo uno, Tokugawa Ieyasu logró ser proclamado shogun en 1603, con lo que terminaba así una de las épocas más sangrientas vividas en el archipiélago nipón: el llamado período Sengoku.

Durante ciento cincuenta años en la era conocida como Sengoku o de los "Estados en guerra", en Japón, apenas se disfrutó de breves períodos de paz; y una y otra vez los daimios se enfrascaban en violentos enfrentamientos bélicos contra los clanes vecinos arrastrando tras ellos a sus vasallos: campesinos, artesanos, comerciantes y cualquier persona que estuviese en condiciones de empuñar las armas, sumiendo al país en el caos, la muerte, la destrucción y la miseria.

Esta es la historia del hombre cuyas cualidades personales, unidas a una extraordinaria suerte que nunca lo abandonó, logró vencer a todos sus oponentes y hacerse con el poder en el Japón medieval, empleando todos los medios posibles sin reparar en daños y víctimas, aunque entre estos se encontrase su esposa e hijo y otros familiares queridos.

Tokugawa Ieyasu fue un personaje de leyenda cuya historia no se ha divulgado lo suficiente, al menos en el mundo occidental, y cuya personalidad se correspondió con la de un hombre que se movió hábilmente en su época de acuerdo con el inesperado rumbo de los acontecimientos para ubicarse, no siempre al lado justo, sino de los más fuertes, aunque fuese de forma circunstancial, para luego acechar como un audaz felino el momento oportuno para atacar los puntos débiles de sus enemigos, o los que anteriormente hubiesen sido sus amigos, porque la amistad, los pactos, los compromisos eran para él circunstanciales y su cumplimiento debía subordinarse al estado de los acontecimientos, los cuales podían variar de un momento a otro.

Cuando su vejez debió ser tranquila, con todo el país unificado bajo su égida, tuvo que tomar de nuevo la espada, y ponerse el casco y la coraza para salir a combatir, y esto a una edad muy avanzada, solo un año antes de morir, y ante un rival poderoso, pero al final volvió a triunfar y su furia cayó sobre aquellos que osaron levantarse contra él. Esta vez no hubo perdón para nadie, ni aunque llevara su sangre o se tratase de una mujer o un niño pequeño.

Ieyasu no supo al morir como podría ser el destino de la dinastía por él creada. Murió con esa incertidumbre y por ello pidió ser deidificado para velar desde el mas allá por el bienestar de los suyos.

Le tocó vivir una época convulsa y violenta, pero dejó como legado un país unificado y en paz, si se puede llamar paz el vivir bajo un gobierno despótico y con limitados derechos en un conjunto de islas aislado del mundo durante más de 250 años.

Fue la vida de Tokugawa Ieyasu un conjunto de eventos inesperados en un camino lleno de obstáculos impredecibles donde su férrea voluntad, su astucia, su sangre fría para actuar audaz y racionalmente ante los incidentes más inesperados, le permitió salir victorioso, sin olvidarnos de la que siempre estuvo a su lado acompañándolo en todo momento, de esa amante fiel solo para los espíritus valientes y audaces: la suerte.
