The tales in the Shifting Horizons anthology of short stories and flash fiction were written during 2021 and 2022 and reflect some of the challenges that we have all faced in these challenging times.
Sensitively written and with flashes of humour, the collection features a doomed wedding, the wrong funeral, various escape plans, a murder or two, a ghost and several inspiring gardens. Through her stories, Sheena considers some of the mental health issues that have become increasingly common in recent times, and explores what it means to be free from anxieties, toxic relationships and haunting memories. She understands the courage it takes to escape, and with her characters, enjoys the thrill of taking a different path. Often the end point is a positive place, but sometimes not - the pill is not sugar coated, and the reader is kept guessing right to the end of the story. The healing influence of art, music, trees and wildlife is a recurring theme.
Sheena is a constant observer of the everyday and the characters that appear in the Shifting Horizons stories are skillfully drawn and true to life. Many of us will have come across people just like them, or might even recognise ourselves!
These characters of assorted ages, backgrounds and sexuality, journey into the emotional unknown and experience different horizons and perspectives, taking the reader along for the, sometimes perilous, ride. Buckle up!
Sheena's stories have appeared in Secret Attic and Glittery Literary publications, and on CafeLit, Fiction on the Web, and The Writers Club websites.
