Parmi les plus récentes, on peut ainsi citer les séries télévisées Sherlock et Elementary ou le film de Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes et sa suite.L'ensemble des aventures écrites par Arthur Conan Doyle comporte quatre romans et cinquante-six nouvelles originales. Mais William Gillette, l'acteur qui jouait Sherlock Holmes, en est généralement considéré comme l'auteur.Conan Doyle laissa également dans ses archives le synopsis d'une aventure, L'Aventure du grand homme, et une aventure complète, Sur la piste du faussaire, qui fut publiée à titre posthume en son nom aux États-Unis; mais une partie des droits d'auteur revint à Arthur Withaker.L'existence de Sherlock Holmes doit beaucoup au professeur en chirurgie de Conan Doyle, le docteur Joseph Bell. Ses déductions étonnantes sur les patients et leurs maladies l'impressionnèrent beaucoup.Selon Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes aurait effectué ses premières déductions durant ses années étudiantes, autour de l'année 1875. L'idée d'en faire son métier lui est donnée par M. Trevor, père de l'un de ses camarades de classe.Holmes commence son activité professionnelle en 1878. Il rencontre le docteur Watson en 1881.Holmes et Watson partageront le même appartement jusqu'au mariage de ce dernier.Avec sa disparition en 1891, à la suite de son affrontement avec le professeur Moriarty et la mort de ce dernier dans les chutes du Reichenbach, tout le monde croit Holmes mort (Le dernier problème (1891)).
