About the Book

Solomon L. Powell inscribes Shepherd Despised as an "S.O.S. call to repentance written especially for pastors, missionaries, and sold-out disciples of King Jesus." He writes not to those content to warm the pews but to those most on his heart: those who love and are completely committed to the God of the Bible. Those who want the full joy that comes only by walking in total obedience to His heart. To this audience, the author offers his straightforward assertion: We cannot live in full surrender to the God of the Bible as Master if we neglect Him as Shepherd. After some introductory surveys, the key exegetical section of the book includes an straight-forward exposition of Psalm 23 (with exegetical notes from Keil and Delitzch, Kidner, Ironside, Keller, etc), working from the claim that this perhaps over-familiar psalm is actually primarily about God's desires, not ours. He asserts that this psalm demonstrates at least two clear desires of God's heart that some American disciples have, as a whole, despised rather than satisfied (he puts himself in this camp). These two particular desires (which you will have to read to discover) have everything to do with God's heart and role as a Shepherd. The premise is built that if we dare to call this particular God our "master", we must submit to him as shepherd also. To call him "Master" but live our lives in a manner or at a pace that runs ripshod over his two "Shepherd"-related desires for us is to be, at best, inconsistent and, at worst, defiant. It will also cause us to miss some of His leading, and above all miss out on this part of His heart and the sweet privilege and opportunity we have to relate to Him in the sheep-to-shepherd kind of way that He desires. To do this is to miss out on a part of God Himself. And the joy and peace and life connected to it. The author believes that a lifestyle that neglects His heart as Shepherd is one that brings us unnecessary pain and weakens our ministries, weakens our marriages, and weakens our families. Worst of all, such a lifestyle brings our God grief, not glory, and heart-ache, not delight. With that premise built, the entire second half of the book offers ideas, stories from his own struggle, advice, and tender but strong urging for those who are weak in this area. Some parts are more strongly exhortative for especially stubborn sheep (like he was). All parts are compassionate. And the book closes with a rich resources appendix including relevant quotations, input, and resources from the likes of Dr. James Dobson, Cloud & Townsend, Wycliffe Counseling Ministry, his own personal battle, and the Scriptures themselves. With the training of an exegete, and the heart of a pastor, the author calls for all sold-out disciples to be courageous, repent if needed, and humbly begin to learn to walk more cooperatively, submissively and sensitively with God as Shepherd. If we want a closer walk with the God who is both our Father and our Master, we have to learn His heart as Shepherd as well. And then respond. Greater intimacy with the King of the world awaits us, and there is no time to waste!
