About the Book

Setting up Safe Haven was written to mark the second anniversary of a craft group set up by two Christian ladies who wanted to do something for those with learning disabilities. Their second anniversary comes during the same year as their church celebrates 150 years of owning the land that their brick and mortar home is built on. Although their Victorian building has been adapted for the modern age it is definitely not the ideal place to set up such a craft group. This did not stop them having a go and getting something beautiful up and running. This book is a review of their journey. It explains some of the challenges that they faced and shares the lessons that they learnt. One of the things that saddens Susan is seeing so many churches that do nothing to serve the community around them. Her aim with this book is to encourage more people to have a go and do something. There are many who talk about incarnate mission or establishing fresh expressions of church or mission shaped ministry. We can see the evidence of the work that they are doing helping the church look outwards. Pioneering new things is not easy. It is a journey that starts with the first step. We hear a lot about what people have achieved but not so much about how they did it and what they learned from doing it. This book is intended to fill that gap. FROM THE BACK COVERIt is amazing what two ordinary women can do when they decide to do something. To say they started Safe Haven without a clue about what they were doing is a slight understatement. They knew how to knit and crochet. They had both helped children make things but this was different. They had both spent time with people who were not like them but not with people like those who came to this craft group.Safe Haven is a craft group for special people. People who in years gone by would have spent their lives in hospital. Today they live in the community. They, and those who work with them are not the obvious community of interest for a church to connect with but that is what they managed to do, almost by accident. The lessons they learned were many and varied. Looking back there were a number of challenges that needed to be faced that others don't have. Yet they are proof that all you need is love and a willingness to work with God and amazing things will happen.
