El libro se presenta como un conjunto de sermones, escritos sobre la base de algunas homilías pronunciadas, en principio, para un público bien intencionado. Pero en realidad lo que se ha conseguido es una serie de meditaciones muy profundas dirigidas a los hombres de una Iglesia y un mundo "en ocaso", esto es, en tiempos que el autor ha descrito como de "la gran apostasía" y de una "Iglesia catacumbal", en un momento de "invierno eclesial", donde aparece casi naturalmente la pregunta sobre el final de los tiempos. Situación que presenta, ya desde el inicio, una aporía: ¿Tiene sentido predicar en tal medio ambiente, donde nadie parece tener intención de escuchar, o van a estar prontos a rechazar el mensaje? Sin embargo, no importa que, aparentemente, el intento pueda parecer inútil, pues el verdadero predicador cristiano sabe que es depositario de una misión, de un mandato, recibido del mismo Señor; y es consciente del efecto "devastador" de la misma Palabra de Dios, más allá de la disposición de los oyentes a la que va dirigida.

Estamos pues ante una meditación profunda. Tal profundidad de contenidos, tiene como fundamento un doble hecho: por un lado, el autor se encuentra en el cenit de su vida, con la plenitud de sabiduría auténtica que dan los muchos años de una larga existencia vivida en un intento serio de amar a Dios y de servicio y fidelidad a la Iglesia, y, que vislumbra ya la llegada a la Patria definitiva; de otro, el autor sustenta sus reflexiones, sobre todo, en la proclamación valiente de la Palabra de Dios, en su doble función ontológica y didáctica, y de la Tradición de la Iglesia, sin tergiversarlas ni traicionarlas, lo que hace que sus argumentos sean contundentes.

Todo el libro se apoya además sobre los postulados de la trascendental teoría del amor de su autor, que alcanzan en el libro desarrollos nuevos, como se puede ver en el capítulo dedicado a Pentecostés, por ejemplo. Resalta, además, en todos los capítulos, el papel central de la Humanidad de Jesucristo, punto clave de la espiritualidad de A. Gálvez.

Se llega, así, a la raíz y al fundamento último de los temas que aborda, y que son, en definitiva, los que realmente importan: Jesucristo, el verdadero sacerdocio, la muerte cristiana, la vida entendida como una invitación a la fiesta de amor divino-humano, la realidad del Espíritu Santo, el sufrimiento y la vida de Cruz, la oración cristiana mística, etc.

Si la homilética católica fue siempre la presentación de la alegría de la Buena Nueva, este libro, se convierte en un canto de esperanza y de gozo, de la única que se le puede dar a un Mundo y a una Iglesia "en ocaso". Es sobre esto, en donde se puede cimentar la verdadera esperanza cristiana. El libro es también un canto a esa Esperanza. Pero la Alegría y el Amor, la Esperanza y la Nostalgia (con mayúsculas), no pueden ser expresadas muchas veces con la simple prosa, y es por ello, que el autor recurre con frecuencia al auxilio de la poesía, insinuando un mundo de sentimientos y de realidades que más se pueden intuir que describir. Por lo que el libro está también transido de belleza estética.
