About the Book
Imagine this. You were in an accident, a car crash. You suffered serious head injuries. It took weeks to awake from a coma. Doctors, neurosurgeons, and trauma experts say you have fully recovered. But you know you haven't. Deep down in your heart and soul, you know you haven't fully recovered because you know you no longer possess a soul.
As a result of this accident you realize you have no conscience. You do not experience feelings of guilt or remorse. You don't care about strangers, colleagues, family friends or even loved ones. You feel no shame or guilt. The whole concept of responsibility is alien to you. But best of all, you can conceal all of this from the people closest to you with effortless ease. They have no idea that your psyche is radically different from theirs. They assume you have a conscience because, well, everyone has. But you don't, why? You don't, because, you are a psychopath.
You can do so many things you have never done before, bad things, very bad things, horrible, sick, disgusting, perverse things. You are not restricted by guilt or shame. And you are smart, much, much smarter than those around you. You can rob, abduct, rape, torture, dismember and kill and feel no conscience whatsoever. If you genuinely believed you could do what you liked, without guilt or shame, and get away with it - how would you choose to live your life?
The answer will depend on what you actually want from life. This is simply because not everyone is made the same way. We are all wired with different circuits. Irrespective of your conscience you may just as easily choose a life of inertia as one filled with wild ambitions. Some of us are brilliant and bright; some of us are dim and dull; but most of us, whether we have a conscience or not, are somewhere in between. There are violent people motivated by blood lust and there are kind people motivated by decent values.
Psychopaths represent a not insignificant 4% of the entire population. You may think that this is a very low percentage but when you compare it with those who suffer from anorexic eating disorders (3.43%) or those with colon cancer (0.4%) or those suffering from schizophrenia (1%) then the figure is alarmingly high - one in every twenty five. Yet surprisingly, we know very little about this disorder. We only think in terms of violent psychopathy - sadists, rapists, pedophiles, murderers, serial sex killers, mass murderers - people who have conspicuously broken the law many times over, and who, if they are ever caught, will be imprisoned. But, there is also a large number of non-violent psychopaths among us.
Those who have no conscience at all are a group unto themselves, whether they are homicidal tyrants or merely ruthless social snipers. Some commentators believe that the presence or absence of conscience is a deep human division, arguably more significant than race, intelligence, or even gender. What differentiates a psychopath, who is a serial fraudster, from one, who occasionally robs supermarkets, or, what makes the difference between an ordinary bully and a sociopathic serial killer - is nothing more than social status, ambition, sex drive, intelligence, blood lust, or simple opportunity. What distinguishes the psychopath or sociopath from the rest of us is a void in their brain or a black hole in their psyche.
It's now time for us to delve into that black hole and into the minds of the world's most perverted sex killers.
