About the Book

Travis talks about sensory issues he faces with autism. Travis experience senses in different ways than neurotpyical people do. He shares what it feels like for him to be touched by other people and talks about the differences between sensory input versus sensory output. Travis explains that even the slightest touch against his skin makes it feel like someone is stabbing him or ripping into his skin. He explains that sometimes people with autism are much more sensitive to physical touch and experience the pressure from the touch differently than other people do. Travis also shares how clothing effects him and he has to be careful about what kind of clothes he wears. He cannot wear turtle necks because they make him feel like he is being cut or hit or stabbed. The pain is unbearable from wearing turtle necks or tight clothing. Travis explains how he likes to be on the giving end of touch more so than on the receiving end. When people with autism are on the receiving end of physical touch then they are able to prepare ahead of time for the pressure and they also have more control over just how much pressure is being used during the physical touch exchange. Travis prefers sensory output over sensory input because he has complete control over the pressure being used. Travis shares that he has to really know someone before he experiences sensory input. Sensory input is when someone touches you. Sensory output is when you are touching someone else. Travis shares all about his sensory issues and how he has come up ideas to help him cope and overcome some of the issues he has. Here is an excerpt from his new book Sensory issues with Autism. "Having autism not only means that I have a lot of social issues related to not having good social skills but it also means that I have a lot of sensory issues with the way I process sensory senses such as touch, smell, taste, etc. Having autism means I experience physical touch in different ways than most people do. I am more sensitive to things and touch than a lot of people are and I know that it is hard for me to be touched because I am scared it will hurt me. When someone touches me they have no idea how hard they are touching me. I have learned that when someone just puts their hand on me it feels like they are stabbing me or cutting me or hitting me. I experience all sensory issues in a different way than my neurotypical peers do. You could put two people together. You can have me and another neurotypical person and someone could be standing there and touching us with the same pressure and it would feel like someone was using more pressure on me than it would the other person. I experience the pressure of the touch in much more significant levels than neurotypical people do and because of that it makes it hard for me to be touched by other people. It also makes it hard to get hugs because you cannot control how hard someone squeezes you when they are hugging you. I have to really know a person before I can give them a hug because of that and it will hurt me if they squeeze me too hard when they hug me. If someone squeezes me too hard it feels like they are cutting into my skin and really hurting me. It is like someone is trying to rip my skin open."
