About the Book

Located close to the antipodes of the country that gave birth to the modern project, Singapore is a surprisingly triumphant champion of modern housing strategy. Perhaps as the result of the combination of Asian authoritarianism and mentality, this southeast Asian island and city-state has the mechanistic and rationalist program of modernity. In this book, Rem Koolhaas documents Singapore's urban renewal since Lee Kuan Yew began heading the former British colony's first autonomous government in 1959 and initiated development on the island according to UN recommendations. Singapore's trajectory was not unique, but rather became an archetypal pattern that could soon be seen throughout Asia.
