Die Frage also, wie sich das Leben des Individuums durch es selbst, unter Annahme einer von innen kommenden Aktivität, zu einer erfüllten und glücklichen Zeit gestalten läßt, stellt sich für Spalding daher in praktischer Absicht. Dabei geht es dem Autor darum, den Einzelnen aufzufordern, sich mit sich selbst zu beschäftigen, um Einsicht in die eigene Natur zu erhalten und aus diesen Erkenntnissen heraus selbst tätig zu werden. - Der Einzelne ist angehalten sein Leben aus eigener Einsicht, unabhängig von Autoritäten bzw. der Meinung anderer, selbst zu bestimmen. Der Begriff der Selbstbestimmung ist ein Terminus, der bereits im antiken Denken angelegt ist und bei den Theoretikern der Renaissance in eine zentrale, theoretische Position gelangt. Aber erst in der Nachfolge der kritischen Philosophie Immanuel Kants wird er zu einem eigenständigen Terminus mit grundlegender Bedeutung. Deshalb ist die unmittelbare Vorgeschichte des Begriffs im Zeitalter Kants von besonderem Gewicht. Ziel dieser Magisterarbeit war es deshalb, den Beitrag von Johann Joachim Spalding zu dieser Entwicklung aufzuklären. Seine Schrift "Gedanken über die Bestimmung des Menschen", die 1748 erstmals in Greifswald erschien und dreizehn Auflagen erlebt hat, trägt seit der vierten Auflage aus dem Jahre 1751 den Titel "Die Be-stimmung des Menschen".
