Galizien und Bukowina waren Kernlande judischen Lebens, und nirgendwo anders hat der judische Glaube einen derart bildhaften Ausdruck gefunden wie dort. Die Synagogen waren ganz im Gegensatz zum mosaischen Bilderverbot prachtvoll mit figurlichen Bildern ausgestattet, die Glauben, Identitat und Hoffnung der Juden dokumentieren. Viele von ihnen sind dank des Engagements polnischer und ukrainischer lnstitutionen und Spenden aus aller Welt restauriert und erstrahlen in neuem Glanz. Der Bildband mit Fotografien von Helmut Meyer zur Capellen und Texten von Reiner Sorries will diese vergessene Bilderwelt zwischen Krakau und Czernowitz wieder ins Bewusstsein rucken.Ein Grossteil der Malereien entstand im spaten 19. und fruhen 20. Jahrhundert, als sich die Lebensbedingungen der judischen Bevolkerung drastisch zu verschlechtern begannen. So stellten sich die Fragen 'wer sind wir', 'was glauben wir' und 'was hoffen wir'. Darauf geben die Bilder Antworten. Die Darstellungen der Zwolf Stamme Israels reprasentieren die Ganzheit des Volkes Israels. Die zwolf Tierkreiszeichen stehen fur die Ordnung Gottes und seine Verheissung, diese Welt zu bewahren. Und die Bilder von den Statten im Heiligen Land stehen fur die Sehnsucht und Hoffnung, dorthin zuruckzukehren. Viele folgten dem Ruf nach Palastina, die Mehrheit blieb.Zu bleiben, erforderte Mut und Vergewisserung. Und damit fuhrt dieser Bildband nicht nur in die Vergangenheit, sondern will eine Metapher sein fur die Gegenwart, in der angesichts von wachsender Anfeindung und Antisemitismus das Bleiben wieder Mut erfordert. Die Moglichkeit einer Auswanderung nach Israel wird wieder verstarkt in Betracht gezogen.Mit Bedacht zitiert der Bildband vor diesem Hintergrund in seinem Titel eine Zeile aus den Pirket Avot (5, 22): .Sei mutig wie ein Leopard .. .! Und im vollen Wortlaut: Juda, Temas Sohn, sagte: Sei mutig wie ein Leopard, geschwind wie ein Adler, schnell wie ein Hirsch und heldenmutig wie ein Lowe, den Willen deines Vaters im Himmel zu erfullen. Diese vier Tiere sind es auch, die stets wiederkehrend zum Bildprogramm der Synagogen in Galizien und der Bukowina gehoren.Der Bildband wendet sich gleichermassen an Juden wie an Nichtjuden. Er mochte Juden an einen Ausschnitt ihrer Geschichte erinnern, der viel mit ihrer Gegenwart gemein hat. Nichtjuden mochte er mit seinen knappen Texten die wesentlichen Aspekte judischen Glaubens nahebringen. Nicht zuletzt soll es um die Dokumentation judischer Kunst und Kultur gehen, die nur ein wenig von uns entfernt eine solch prachtvolle Entfaltung gefunden hat.
