Rebbi Yehuda Halevi [auch Yehuda Halevi oder ha-Levi; hebräisch: יהודה הלוי und Yehuda ben Shmuel Halevi יהודה בן שמואל הלוי; arabisch: يهوذا اللاوي Yahuḏa al-Lawi; c. 1075 - 1141] war ein spanisch-jüdischer Arzt, Dichter und Philosoph. Er wurde 1075 oder 1086 in Spanien, entweder in Toledo oder Tudela, geboren und starb kurz nach seiner Ankunft im Heiligen Land im Jahr 1141, dem damaligen Kreuzritterkönigreich Jerusalem.

Rebbi Yehuda Halevi gilt als einer der größten hebräischen Dichter, der sowohl für seine religiösen als auch für seine weltlichen Gedichte gefeiert wird, von denen viele in der heutigen Liturgie erscheinen. Sein größtes philosophisches Werk war das - Sefer ha-Kuzari.

Es ist das philosophische Werk von Rebbi Yehuda Halevi [Riha "l], das im Jahr 1139 in jüdischem Arabisch geschrieben wurde. Der jüdische Weise Rebbi Yehuda Ben Tibbon übersetzte dieses Buch aus dem Arabischen ins Hebräische. Die erste hebräische Fassung des Buches wurde "Sefer ha-kuzari" genannt und erhielt so seinen berühmten Namen. Das Buch ist in Form eines Gesprächs zwischen dem König der Chasaren und einem jüdischen Weisen über die Grundlagen des Judentums geschrieben. Die Geschichte der freiwilligen Konversion der Chasaren einige Generationen zuvor dient dem Autor als Hintergrund und Grundlage für den Charakter eines Chasarenkönigs. Das Kuzari-Buch gilt als eine der Säulen der jüdischen Philosophie im Besonderen und des jüdischen Denkens im Allgemeinen.

Das Buch, das aus fünf Teilen besteht, ist in fünf Essays verfasst. Es beschreibt und schützt die Lehren des jüdischen Glaubens in einer Zeit, in der das Judentum zwischen dem christlichen Hammer und dem muslimischen Amboss steht, und in einem Angriff beider Teile der Philosophie und seitens der Karaiten [Gruppe von Juden, die das Judentum verließen und sich weigerten, den Weisen zu folgen]. Das Buch bedient sich äußerlich der platonischen Methodik des Dialogs, wobei der Begriff des Dialogs etwas anders interpretiert wird, und innerlich verwendet Rebbi Yehuda Halevi, der trotz seiner prinzipiellen Ablehnung aristotelischer Konzepte oft auf diese zurückgreift, um die von ihm vorgestellten Ideen zu illustrieren.

Anhand von Dialogen zwischen dem König der Chasaren, der auf der Suche nach einer neuen Religion ist, und dem jüdischen Weisen, der ihm das Judentum beschreibt, zeigt Rebbi Yehuda Halevi ein ganzes Fundament des jüdischen Glaubens auf, das nicht auf kalter philosophischer Logik, sondern auf historisch-prophetischer Offenbarung beruht, die dem rationalen Denken hier nicht widerspricht. Anhand der Fragen und Untersuchungen von König Kuzor konfrontiert Rebbi Yehuda Halevi verschiedene Religionen, Glaubensrichtungen und philosophische Meinungen und stellt die Position des Judentums zu diesen Fragen gemäß seiner Interpretation dar. Im Gegensatz zu theoretischen philosophischen Büchern ist dieses Buch pulsierend und lebendig und fordert den Leser durch seine Form, seinen Stil und seinen Inhalt zum Weiterlesen auf.
