Cuando el antropólogo Oliver La Farge visitó Jacaltenango durante la primera expedición de la Tulane University, de Louisiana en 1925, se sorprendió al escuchar una noticia de interés antropológico. Un vecino de la ciudad de Comitán, Chiapas, México; le contó que al otro lado de la frontera, en Jacaltenango, Guatemala; se seguía practicando una antigua ceremonia maya que los indígenas del lugar llamaban Ijom Hab'il o Cargador del Año. Motivado por esta sorprendente noticia, La Farge organizó la tercera expedición de la Tulane University al occidente de Guatemala. En esta expedición (1927) La Farge visitó Los Cuchumatanes y se estableció entre los mayas jakaltekos del noroccidente de Guatemala. En su etnografía The Year Bearer's People (1931) Oliver La Farge describió la intensidad con que la gente se sumergía en el mundo espiritual de sus ancestros durante la ceremonia del Ijom Hab'bil. En otras palabras, Oliver La Farge observó que, a finales de la década de 1920, la tradición religiosa de los mayas jakaltekos seguía tan pujante como en tiempos prehispánicos .Las creencias indígenas sobre el más allá o el reino de la muerte fueron reemplazadas por conceptos medievales y cristianos. El infierno que para los mayas era el vagar sin llegar a un eterno lugar de descanso, se convirtió en un mar de fuego y llamas. La imagen del diablo como un ser maligno con cuernos y cola se popularizó entre los indígenas por la religión católica y evangélica. La gente indígena comenzó a adaptarse a estas creencias occidentales durante la catequización en los primeros años de la conquista y la colonización española de América. A principios del siglo XX, las epidemias seguían cobraban muchas vidas en estos pueblos del occidente de Guatemala, y la gente se preocupaba mucho por la salud y el futuro de sus hijos. Por esta razón, surgieron las "promesas espirituales" (nab'eb'al) o "recordatorio" para cumplir con las promesas hechas al Creador para permitir que las hijas y los hijos crecieran sanos y fuertes.*****VÍCTOR MONTEJONació en Jacaltenango, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, en 1951. Se identifica como maya jakalteko. Fue maestro de escuela primaria urbana en Guatemala, de 1972 a 1980. Luego, exiliado a los Estados Unidos a finales de1982. Hizo sus estudios de antropología en la Universidad del Estado de Nueva York, en Albany, y su doctorado en antropología de la Universidad de Connecticut, EE.UU. Fue profesor asistente en Bucknell University y en la Universidad de Montana, Missoula. Luego, profesor y Director del Departamento de Estudios Nativos Americanos de la Universidad de California, Davis, de donde se jubiló en 2011.Ha publicado varias obras literarias: Testimonio: muerte de una comunidad maya en Guatemala (Curbstone Press, 1991 y Editorial de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, 1993).
